Getting to the mountains in Slovakia is far easier then you would think, infact, its often easier then trying to navigate you way around the alps due to the central location of the resorts and the quality of the local public transport services.
Plane, Trains and Automobiles
There are a number of choices to be made when flying to Slovakia. Each has its benefits as to transfer time & access to the mountains, with different low cost carriers all making regular flights. The 3 most important airports in the area are Bratislava, Krakow and Poprad.
Poprad
Poprad is a mere stonesthrow from the major Slovak resorts, with Strbske Pleso, Jasna and Tatranska Lomnica all within 30 mintues drive. The downside of the airport at the moment is that it is only served by one airline. http://www.skyeurope.com fly here only a hand full of times a week; and only from Stansted. This can be a nightmare for those in the north the UK. Also the downside is that the flights can become expensive quickly. Limited flights and high demand have put the average return cost of a flight to £160. Taxi form the airport is the best way to get around and will cost around 1000sk (£20) - Call Jonny for best rates on +421 908 200 201
Bratislava
Bratislava being the capital of Slovakia is a great choice for those on a budget. Served by a number of carriers with daily flights from all of the UK, it is the economists choice. Flights from Stansted, East Midlands, Manchester and more regularly arrive here as its a destination for the odd stag trip and city traveller. The down side is the transfer, To drive from Bratislava to Liptovsky Mikulas at the best of time will take 3 hours. The best option is by Train, take the bus from the station for around 50sk or organise a taxi before arrival; 400sk (Conrad +421 903 465 205) and take a first class train ride between Bratislava Hl. to Liptovsky Mikulas (for Jasna/Donovaly) or Poprad (Strbske Pleso/Tatranska Lomnica) for around 500sk (£10) - Check out http://www.ryanair.com and http://www.skyeurope.com for flightsKrakow, Poland
Despite being situated over the boarder in Poland, Krakow is a popular choice of access point the to the Tatra mountain range. Poland benefits from having very regular flights by low cost carriers making it possibly the cheapest way to get to teh mountains. The negative points are that once here, a hire car is the only feasible way of getting between the airport and resorts, which all adds to the cost. Getting to Poprad from Krakow is all about knowing your connection systems. A bus to Zakopane (big Polish resort), then to Poprad is an ordeal. Train connections are not even worth thinking about. The options are car hire or private hire of a driver who knows the area. Call Jonny on +421 908 200 201 with your requirements and let him organise things for you.
