Independant Advice from Experienced Slovak Skiiers

Jasna

Jasna by far is the most well known and developed resort in Slovakia, with it, having the best reputation for both quality of skiable area and services provided.

Set near to the city of Liptovsky Mikulas, the area provides services for both Summer and Winter adventures with stunning scenary to match.

The Resort

New lifts, new runs, new services....... this is what has been happening in and around Jasna over the last few years since the Slovakia joined the EU and tries to cement itself as a destiniation for winter travellers, Jasna is at the forefront of this.

Split into 3 sections as starter points, the areas of Zahradky, Jasna Biela Put and Otupne are what we will refer to when mentioning areas. All are interlinked and can access each area when navigating the piste map properly.

The 6-man chairlift at Zahradky is the most modern and used of all the facilities. Its the first access point to the one road in resort - meaning that generally this area will become crowded first. Zahradky offers potential for both ski and snowboard hire, with 2 draglifts next to the main chairlift that help disperse the crowds somewhat at busy times.

Jasna Biela Put offers the best place for beginner skiiers to master their trade. One drag lift operates from the base which again becomes crowded with crazed Russians and Polish in busy times, but rest assured once you are there its a good place to start.

Otupne, which is located at the far end of the resorts one road in/out is generally the quietest place to start. Hit the gondola first thing in the morning and spend a good hour with no one else around. From here you also have access to the chair lift to take you above the famed "skull and crossbones" run. Access to the Freeride zones is easies from this section.

Food on the hill is mixed, with basic sausage and chips to the more traditional goulash, all at low low prices. A beer and some scran will set you back around £2 - yep..... £2!!!! - the average cost of a beer on the slope is just 50p. There are more up-market restaurants to be found in the Hotel Grand, set below the Otupne area of the resort.

Prices Overview:

Ski rental - from 2500sk per week (£50)
Snowboard Hire - 2300sk (£45)
Lessons from 500sk (£10)
Ski Pass, 6 Days - 4200sk (£85)

Places to Stay

With the resort being a satellite of the City of Lipovsky Mikulas, there is a wealth of places to stay that all offer different extras and benefits. When you decide where you stey, dont just think about the price of the place, be careful to judge the location too. If you head for somewhere in the resort itself, although you will benefit from almost doorstep skiing, in the evening you will struggle to sit through the hotel bar's caberet act without wanting to kill the keyboard player, meaning that nightly descents down the mountain to town will be in order. On the other hand, if you base yourself in the City, you have to remember that organisation is the key to get the right buses at the right times. However you are much better placed for evening activities and the odd rendevous with traditional spirits in the local pubs......

Our experience has led us to suggest staying somewhere between the city and the resort, meaning that either is a short transfer, with the added bonus of beautiful surroundings in the quieter villages of Demanova and Demanovska Dolina.

Our Recommendation
The first and only full time UK operation based here are the kind people at "Propaganda Snowboards" - who have been providing great service for UK clients since 2005. To quote reviews from the media.........

Eating Out

With a city the size of Liptovsky Mikulas at its service, there are plenty of options for evening meal times. If you are in Jasna in the evening, check out the restaurant at the Hotel Grand which offers a wide variety of tastes at a good price for a 4* hotel. For the more plush, head to the Tri Studnicky hotel in Demanovska Dolina for something a bit special in Slovakia top hotel of 2005.

In the city itself, the restaurants that offer the best price and service are Atlas Restaurant, Soda Club and Route 66........ Expect to pay around 200sk (£4) per head for a main meal.

Apres Ski & Evening Entertainment

If its partying until the early hours of the morning, or the more sedate relaxing activity you are after, you cant go wrong in the city. Some 50 bars around town await you serving beers from just 18sk (35p) and open till the sun rises. However its worth noting that Friday and Saturday nights are when you will find the most people about town. Only B-Club during the week is generally busy, but its to be avoided if possible!! Bars of note which are worth a visit include Route-66 with its cheesey Slovak dance and tv's to catch up on the football scores (although dont be there when the ice hockey kicks in! - they cant get enough of it!) - or head to Jumbo Pub in the town square for a nice setting and pool tables........
